I strode quickly through the monolithic, oppressive atmosphere of the cathedral, past the tawdry little confessionals that littered its space. The Cathedral had been built over Francesco's beloved Porziuncola, the simple wilderness chapel he restored with his friends centuries ago, where he finally died into the arms of his beloved Bridegroom. It felt as if the Cathedral was built not to honor, but to contain, the extraordinary force of his loving, lest it undermine the structures of religious and political authority that threaten humanity's survival today as much as they did in Francesco's own time. As I passed through the open doorway of the inner chapel, I fell to my knees and dissolved in a terrible, sweet force of love that rocked my world forever ...
Please join me for a brief, powerful exploration of the Francis no-one ever told you about -- the queer, Sufi, peace warrior whose life and teachings changed the world -- and can again. Throughout his ministry, Francesco challenged the structures of power, economics, war, gender, and sexuality in his society, even crossing the battle-lines of the crusades to build bridges of religious tolerance and understanding between the Christian and Islamic cultures of his time. He imagined himself as both the bride of Christ and as a mother to his companions, saw Christ as both Bridegroom and Mother, and welcomed women into his companionship as "brothers." Francesco's own teaching and practice were profoundly influenced by the ecstatic teachings of the troubadours, the friendship of Sultan Malik al-Kamil of the Ottoman empire, and the Sufi teachers Al Hallaj, Fakr al-Farisi, the mystic and poet Ibn al-Farid. -- and perhaps even Shams of Tabriz! He lived a life of radical embrace that has survived eight hundred years of religious dogma and spiritual abuse, inspiring, challenging, and freeing those with eyes to see!
Through Radical Embrace, we, like St. Francis, can shatter the illusion of separation, discover ourselves in all creation, and experience the ecstatic ocean of Love, described by mystics as "heaven on earth,” that lies beneath the surface of our lives! Join us as we set aside the chains of dogma, surrender our shame, fear, and doubt, explore the ecstatic practices of Saint Francis, and embody his discoveries in our own lives! In this three-hour webinar, I will share my own stories of encountering the radical truth of Francesco's life, and we will explore the eight stages of the path of Radical Embrace: Contemplation, Blessing, Grieving, Longing, Embrace, Munificence, and Surrender, as taught and practiced by Saint Francis. We will discover their power to to bring us back to life and gratitude, free us from the past, open our hearts and awaken in us a profound feeling of connection to our own hearts, to each other, and to the Divine Beloved in whom we live, move, and have our being ...
